Earlier this week, I read an essay about Coco Chanel. In it, she’s quoted:
Women have always been the strong ones of the world. The men are always seeking from women a little pillow to put their heads down on. They are always longing for the mother who held them as infants.
So bitchy, yes? Yet fabulous, to speak in absolutes like that! What drawling confidence!
Last night, at a funeral, she was mentioned in the eulogy. The woman being mourned had a very glamorous life, and had actually met Coco Chanel.
Can you imagine?!
I understand that Chanel was just another person, and a flawed one at that (ahem, Nazis!) but hoo boy! Can you imagine that grit? Going from an orphaned courtesan to one of the world’s wealthiest, most independent women? She’s one for the ages.
In honour of Mlle Chanel, more quotes and some photos!
Don’t spend time beating on a wall, hoping to transform it into a door.
It is always better to be slightly underdressed.
Great loves too must be endured.
(Ain’t that the truth?)
Elegance is refusal.
(Darn, also true!)
Adornment, what a science! Beauty, what a weapon! Modesty, what elegance!
I only drink champagne on two occasions, when I am in love, and when I am not.
You can be gorgeous at thirty, charming at forty, and irresistible for the rest of your life.
Damn straight! Here’s hoping you have some elegance in your day, today. 😉
