I Loved Zsa Zsa Gabor

As a small child, I was quiet and thoughtful, impressionable. I remember seeing images of this woman on TV, and my parents laughing (at what I know recognize as her playfulness).

I thought she was wonderful, with her dresses and her voice. I loved all the fluff and the colour pink and the feathers, the girlishness, even if I didn’t understand why she was so funny.

It’s as an adult that I love Zsa Zsa more. How tough she must have been! And now I finally appreciate her humour  – the knowingness, the winks, the wit.

How many husbands have I had? You mean apart from my own?

You never really know a man until you have divorced him.

Being jealous of a beautiful woman is not going to make you more beautiful.

I want a man who’s kind and understanding. Is that too much to ask of a millionaire?

Such fun, and for adults – these themes, of marriage and sex and gender – that is some grown-up fun right there.

I hope we all remember Zsa Zsa the next time we drink champagne.
