The downside of not posting a weekly recap for months is that there are countless cute, funny stories I haven’t shared.
That said, it also means I’ve had time to reflect on all of the stories I’ve read – and some over the past couple of months have been truly excellent.
Here you go:
- Last week, picking up take-out, a waitress made me laugh while teasing some American tourists. “I hear you’re having an election down there. How’s that going? We haven’t heard a thing. There’s been almost no coverage!” Some of the (ubiquitous, even in Canada) election coverage, of course, has been excellent. This Rolling Stone piece on Hillary was both thoughtful and thought-provoking.
- Another profile of a fascinating women: I could not put down this look at the infamous Elizabeth Holmes. Just goes to show you how far willpower, a shroud of mystery, some buzzwords, and a good marketing plan will get you.
- This story about a dog (Chancer) and a disabled boy is a couple of years old. I cried the first time I read it, I cried when I re-visited last month.
- In Canada, we don’t treat migrant workers well. It’s shameful.
- Why Typical Preschool Crafts Are a Total Waste of Time: “And so, in Christakis’s view, the “very first step” to making a meaningful change in the way preschools approach creative work “is for parents to stop asking children what they made at school each day!” (Exclamation point hers.) Two and three and four really are mighty young ages to already be indoctrinated into the grown-up cult of productivity.”
- Speaking of schools, this story about parents behaving badly made my jaw drop. Holy cow.
- Evidence that girls are often disciplined more harshly than boys. My mind drifts to this often, now.
- At first, when I read this story about a couple who lives Victorian, I thought it was a joke. Nope. Just goes to show you: there really is someone for everyone.
And, lastly:
- This video of a seal escaping an orca was popular at our house. Some of the comments are pretty funny, too: “Killer whales are members of orca-nized crime.” and: “You mean they’re — Mafiosea??”
